Peanut Butter and Chocolate Swirly Muffins


I’m a little bit late with this post, but most of you probably remember (maybe a bit blurry:)) that people around the world were celebrating Halloween on Friday. In Slovenia, Halloween in mostly celebrated by students, as it gives us a good excuse for a party, but it’s actually a new thing around here. I don’t know if Slovenian kids nowadays go trick or treating, at least I’ve never heard a knock on the door. And why is it like that? Why don’t kids around here go trick or treating? Well, it has nothing to do with health or not wanting them to eat too much candy :). We actually have another holiday, when every kid and a lot of students and grown ups dress up. It’s on different date every year, I think it has something to do with the date of Easter which also changes each year, and the best thing is it lasts more then one day, as there are different events through the week. It’s named Pust and it celebrates the passing of the winter and beginning of spring. And on this holiday, kids go from house to house, where people give them candy and sometimes some change. Which is really nice if you come from a small village, I loved that holiday when I was a kid, and even now it’s more likely that I’ll dress up for Pust than for Halloween.


This year, I decided to go to the theater to see a musical (that was actually about wizards and witches), bake some muffins and spend the day with my family and my boyfriend. It was a work-free day so I finally had some time to make up new recipes and spend some quality time with my oven. As it was Halloween, I decided to bake something that would at least resemble the halloween colors – black and orange. Well, I got light and dark brown, but it’s the intention that counts :). Most of the stores were closed, so I scratched out last two spoons of peanut butter remaining, luckily that was more than enough to effect the taste. So, let’s start baking!


Chocolate mix:

1 cup of spelt flour
1/2 cup of raw brown sugar
1 tsp of baking powder
1 tsp of baking soda
1/4 cup of cocoa
2 tbsp of organic vanilla sugar
1/3 cup of chopped dark chocolate

1/2 cup of kamut milk (or other non-diary milk)
1/3 cup of chocolate soy pudding

Peanut butter mix:

1 cup of spelt flour
1/2 cup of raw brown sugar
1 tsp of baking powder
1 tsp of baking soda
1 tbsp of organic vanilla sugar
1/2 cup of chopped salted peanuts

3/4 cup of kamut milk (or other non-diary milk)
2 tbsp ob peanut butter


some chopped salted peanuts and dark chocolate (I melted half above hot water)


First you separately mix the dry and wet ingredients (separately for each mixture) and then pour the wet in the dry ones and stir thoroughly. Pour each mixture into a plastic bag (it can get a bit messy:)) and just before you start pouring the ingredients into the papers, cut off the edge so you get a small hole instead of the corner. Then there’s the complicated part, easier if you find a helper: you need to pour both mixtures at the same time, making swirls and distributing each mixture on the both sides of the muffin.


I decorated them differently. On the first ones, I sprinkled some chopped salted peanuts mixed with chopped dark chocolate. I left the second ones “topping-less” and for the third ones, I melted some chocolate, spread it on the top and again added chopped peanuts (after they have already been baked).

Bake for 20 minutes at 200°C
